Koutetsujou no Kabaneri ( Review ) ( No Spoiler )

Status :- Finished Airing
Episodes :- 12
Genre :- Action, Horror, Fantasy

The show started very well. Despite of the amount of people comparing it with AoT, the first seemed that this show would be a blast, and also would be nothing like AoT.

The plot besides "group of individuals trying to survive zombie apocalypse on a train" and most of the conflict comes from compromises regarding what's necessary in order to survive, which all gets resolved relatively cleanly for the most part. The majority of the characters are fun and interesting enough, but they're mostly there to be support to the show's two main half-human/half-zombie leads: a young angry science nerd named Ikoma and a little badass, yet emotional girl named Mumei. And even then, the former mostly exists either to support the latter or just be a fighting nerd.

With an anime like Koutetsujou No Kabaneri… it definitely contains a lot of action and drama. We get to explore the journey that the community of Aragane (led by Princess Ayame) to find a safe place away from harm. The storylines lets us get to know some of the characters along the way and sees a small glimpse of their past. There is also cliffhangers that makes us question their fate each time if anything bad happens to them. There are also some moments (especially in the beginning) that really makes you upset. (Trust me, it has happened a lot…)

Animation is good. I didn't expect anything less from the creators of Attack on Titan and they definitely did not let me down. They've done a great job making the Kabane threatening and character designs were honestly pretty good.

There are good characters and bad characters. Most of the main cast were actually written very well, and their backstories really fleshed them out and character development were realistic and I got attached to them. I liked that they used a lead driven by revenge, but he was actually smart as well. He understands the enemy and he has done his research before everything went down.

I really enjoyed this show. It is pretty straight forward and has a lot of great action scenes. Kabaneri doesn't need an intricate plot to make things enjoyable and the tempo of the show was very good because it didn't feel rushed or slow at all. A lot happened in every episode, but not too much and it respected the viewer because it didn't feel the need to explain every little thing.
